Get an International Driver's License

Americans have a fascination with cars. They make movies about them. They restore classic cars. They publish many magazines about them. Driving is part of American culture.

It may take a few months before you can get a U.S. driver's license. Depending on where you live, driving could be the only convenient means of getting around. International driver's license will allow you to rent a car and drive before you get your U.S. driver's license.

When should I take this step?
Two (2) months before school starts. You can get this taken care of closer to the time you leave for America, but you will be very busy right before you go. It's a good idea to take care of it sooner rather than later, so you can relax a little before traveling

Why do I need an international driver's License?
Some states may allow you to use your driver's license from your home country. However, if the license isn't printed in English, they will have difficulty verifying its validity. Getting an international driver's license will save you a lot of time and trouble if you are ever stopped by the police.

What is the speed limit in the U.S.?
This varies from city to city, but most cities will have standards ranging from 25-35 mph (40-56 kph). On freeways the speed limits are set by the federal goverment, so the standards are the same from coast to coast. Freeways speeds range from 55-75 mph (104-120 kph) depending on whether you are in a densely populated or rural area.
