Depending on the requirements of particular universities, you will
need to take two or more of the following exams and receive equal
to or above certain scores on each. High proficiency in English is essential
when taking these exams.
For undergraduate students:
- TOEFL (Test of English as a
Foreign Language) This tests proficiency in the English language.
All international students
must take this test (students from some English-speaking nations may receive
a waiver).
- SAT (Scholastic Aptitude
Test) This measures general math and verbal skills. The SAT is the
most common entrance exam used by American colleges and
universities.
- ACT Assessment (American
College Test) This is a general knowledge test with sections in
English, math, reading,
and science. It is offered five times each year.
For graduate students:
TOEFL (Test of English as a
Foreign Language) This tests proficiency in English. All
international students must take this test (students from some
English-speaking nations may receive a waiver).
GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) The general GRE exam tests verbal, math, and analytical skills. Individual subject exams test the depth and breadth of knowledge in specific fields.
GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test)
This tests areas directly related to the study of business. Students who are applying to business schools must take the GMAT.
LSAT (Law School Admission Test) This tests
areas directly related to the study of law. Students who are applying to law schools must take the GMAT.
MCAT (Medical College
Admission Test) This tests areas directly related to the study of
medicine. Students who are applying to medical schools must take the
GMAT.
Depending on where you apply and for what program, schools may
weigh your scores more heavily than any other part of your
application, or they may simply check that you have met minimum
requirements before looking at other parts of your application.
Some tests--the GRE general exam is one example--allow you to
participate in a "student search service." This is a free service
that allows the testing service to give your name and address to
schools that are looking for applicants with certain scores. You may
hear from good schools that you had not considered.
