Purpose
|
The Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery is designed to give residents of countries around the world the opportunity to come to the United States. By allowing only residents of countries whose citizens have not emigrated to the U.S. in large numbers in preceding years the opportunity to emigrate, the government hopes to increase the cultural diversity of the U.S. population.

Citizens of every country except those listed below may apply:
Canada, China (mainland-born and Macau), Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, Vietnam.

Application Period
|
People interested in DV-2002 (the current cycle) may submit applications during the one month period beginning at noon on October 1, 2000, and ending at noon on November 1, 2000.

Notification Period
|
Winners will be notified by mail between April and July of 2001. People whose names are not drawn will not be notified.

|
All visas or status changes must be issued before September, 30, 2002.
