Hi. The cheapest place you can stay in NYC would be YMCA near Madison Sq. Garden, in other words, near Penn. Station. BUt it's not really clean. I wouldn't recommend it if you are traveling alone and can afford to stay somewhere else. To be honest, I didn't like it becuse there were some bugs in the room. I sometimes stay at Days-Inn Hotel near Times Square when I'm in NYC. It's relatively inexpensive and safe. If your purpose to be in NYC is to see musicals, I would recommend you stay near Times Sq. Have a nice and safe trip!
